Gone are the days where boybands and girl groups used to feature on every top 100 music chart…or so you think. Introducing, Kpop.

Kpop (or Korean pop) is pop music originated from Korea. International audiences enjoy listening to Kpop and watching their music videos, to their extremely catchy tunes, good looks (both girls and boys), eccentric costumes, makeup and mesmerising dance routines.

Kpop was created roughly between the late 1980s to 1990s, and is still being enjoyed by the masses to date. Some of the first bands that paved the way for Kpop include; H.O.T, Seo Taiji and Boys, and Shinhwa. New generations of Kpop bands keep emerging in order to stay relevant to the younger market, with each one trying to be better than the last.

Kpop (as a genre) is currently at its international popularity peak, with shows such as SBS Pop Asia, providing a medium for Australian fans to keep up with the latest Kpop trends and hit songs. Some Kpop artists who have “made it” internationally which you may have heard of include; BTS (a fan favourite), Big Bang, CL and Blackpink.

Though you won’t understand a word they are saying, you’ll find yourself singing their tunes and spending hours on end learning their dance routines.

Why? Because KPop.
